“Tomcat Disposables”
Salmon Library
Allison Blalock
Artist StatementTitled after a song of the same name by Will Wood, Tomcat Disposables also shares the same theme of its lyrics about the value of an animal, or even a life, no matter how small. For the artist specifically, these works focus on cats. These cats are scattered around the library's first-floor study area and second and third-floor bookshelves. They are meant to be found, some obvious, and some unexpected, much like many cat owners' origins in finding their creature of joy. Also, like in the real world, the cats are unprotected from whoever notices them. Hopefully, this is love and care, but real-life cats are often subjected to abuse for no reason other than they are seen as insignificant enough to not be worthy of respect. These cats are not so disposable to those who recognize the value of their existence.
